The brand name Royal Enfield was formed by the cycle manufacturer company, The Enfield Cycle Company Limited in the 1890s which was situated at Redditch, Worestershire, England. The company was owned by Albert Eadie who was a precision firearm parts supplier of the British government’s long-established Royal Small Arms Factory at Enfield, Middlesex, England.
At that time, Eadie figured the brand name Royal Enfield and formed The Enfield Cycle Company partnered with engineer Robert Walker-Smith in 1896. Prior to forming the company, Albert Eadie used to use the brand name Enfield to supply and then manufcturing cycle parts. Today, that same legacy continues through modern models like the Royal Enfield Bullet 350 and the stylish Royal Enfield Hunter 350 (Rebel Blue/Red/Black) which carry the heritage forward.
From 1897 Enfield Company started to manufacture complete cycles and supply cycle parts to other cycle assemblers. In 1901, the Enfield Cycle Company entered into motorcycle manufacturing and produced their first Royal Enfield motorcycle with a 239cc engine.
The first Royal Enfield motorcycle was designed by Bob Walker-Smith and Frenchman Jules Gotiet under the company. The motorcycle was designed with a Minerva engine. The engine was mounted in front of the steering head of a heavy bicycle frame. And the rear wheel was driven by a long rawhide belt. This early engineering spirit still reflects in modern designs such as the Royal Enfield Classic 350 (Halcyon Green/Black) which preserves the vintage look in a refined form.
Later the company produced a V-Twin engine motorcycle in 1909 and two-stroke motorcycles in 1914. In the same year, Royal Enfield also gave priority to produce their largest capacity engine motorcycle with a 770cc V-Twin engine. It was a 6 horsepower engine. That same sense of power and innovation can be seen today in the Royal Enfield Classic 350 Dark (Gun Metal Grey/Stealth Black) and Royal Enfield Classic 350 (Chrome Red/Bronze) which are known for their strong performance and timeless design.
In this First World War period the company supplied their motorcycles to the British, Belgian, French, United States, and Imperial Russian armies. After the First World War, the company also developed various models of motorcycles. They also developed and adopted various features and updates to their motorcycles. Modern-day Royal Enfield continues this tradition with models like the Royal Enfield Meteor 350 (Stellar) that focus on long rides and comfort.
In the meantime in 1931 the founder of the company Albert Eadie died and his partner Robert Walker Smith also expired in 1933. That time the joint managing director Major Frank Smith, the son of Robert Walker-Smith took full control of the Enfield Cycle Company. Under his management, the company continued to grow, setting the foundation for today’s successful global lineup including the elegant Royal Enfield Meteor 350 (Supernova).
During the Second World War, the Enfield Cycle Company was advised to produce military vehicles and equipment. The company produced the number of two-stroke and four-stroke motorcycles as dedicated military motorcycles. At that time they also established their underground manufacturing factory in Westwood, near Bradford-on-Avon, Wiltshire.
Supplying the military vehicles and other equipment they developed in diversified segments like high precision equipment. Meanwhile, the motorcycle manufacturing of British Royal Enfield shut off while the Redditc factory ceased its production in 1967 and the Bradford-on-Avon factory in 1970.
