The brand Castrol was named after the technology of adding Castor Oil extract to make the lubricant thick enough to keep working at very high temperatures in the very early 20th century by its inventor company CC Wakefield Oil Company. The CC Wakefield Oil Company was formed in 1899 by Charles Cheers Wakefield (12 December 1859 – 15 January 1941), an English businessman and 1st Viscount Wakefield, GCVO, CBE in London.

Mr. Wakefield was in a job at American Vacuum Oil Company and left that to start a new business in London, selling lubricants for trains and heavy machinery. Accordingly, Wakefield Oil Company was formed and the company launched its first own lubricant product in 1906.
