AGV was founded in 1946 by Amisano Gino (1920–2009) in Valenza, Italy, taking two other partners. Initially, the company was formed to make leather seats, saddle covers, and light racing helmets for bicyclists. But the following year after the establishment Amisano Gino left his two partners and focused on his own business taking only one employee with him.
In the post-war in Italy, there was a boom in two-wheelers production and sales. Thus Amisano Gino focused to manufacture saddles and backrest pads for Lambretta and Vespa scooters. Then AGV was named taking the initials of Amisano's name and the birthplace of the company Valenza, therefore, Amisano Gino Valenza.
The newly formed manufacturing company AGV got its driving force to catch the continued success when Amisano Gino met Luciana Morando and married her in 1947. Thereafter Luciana Morando deeply involved with AGV and worked hard to develop the company together. Practically both of them lived in the factory starting at seven in the morning and often staying until midnight. Thus AGV established with dedication and strength.
AGV in Helmet Manufacturing
From the beginning, Amisano Gino was devoted to motor racing. Getting close observation to the racers Gino assumed huge commercial opportunity in making motorcycle helmets for them. Accordingly in the same year in 1947, the first-ever motorcycle helmet was made by AGV. It was a leather and cloth-made Pudding Bowl helmet that seen huge success at that time.
Gino was a pioneer in helmet design not even in Italy but also in the globe. Thus he was dedicated to develop craftsmanship and create new designs. He availed the opportunity to experiment, develop, and tested various materials to make improved quality and featured helmets.
Accordingly, the first-ever fiberglass helmet was made in Italy in 1954 by AGV. The helmet was named AGV Helmet 160. The legendary Grand Prix motorcycle racer Carlo Bandirola was the first motorcycle racer who used the AGV Helmet 160 on the track representing MV Agusta (Meccanica Verghera Agusta) in the race.
Later AGV touched many milestones in manufacturing versatile helmets initiating the new designs and manufacturing raw materials. It’s to make AGV helmets safer for the riders and of course durable but comfortable to use. Thus AGV initiated many legendary helmet models in its lifeline.
AGV in Motorsports
The Italian helmet legend Amisano Gino was concentrated on motorsports from the foundation of AGV. Thus in 1958, he started an aggressive marketing strategy with AGV by motorcycle racing endorsements. AGV was the first Italian company which considered motorcycle race and racers for the advertisements.
The AGV name, logo, and product photos were everywhere placed on the rider wearing and around the racing premises. It initiated a broader sense to be focused on the product and the brand. In the meantime, AGV started promoting the motor racers in the racing events.
In 1967 AGV sponsored the 15-times World Champion Italian Grand Prix racing legend, Giacomo Agostini, with three million Liras to endorse AGV in the event. That was likely the first-ever helmet company that sponsored professional motorcycle racers in motorsports. AGV not only sponsored many racers but also sponsored many races and doing promoting racing series at present.
In the past years, AGV promoted many legendary motorcycle and car racers including Giacomo Agostini, Alberto Pagani, Leila Lombardi, Barry Sheene, Kenny Roberts, Johnny Cecotto, Angel Nieto, Marco Lucchinelli, Franco Uncini, Fausto Gresini, Niki Lauda, Emerson Fittipaldi, Randy Mamola, Luca Cadalora, Marco Simoncelli and most recently living legend Valentino Rossi who placed as the Honorary President of the company in 2008.
AGV Ownerships
In the ownership of AGV, the company was held in Gino’s hand until 2001. In 2001 AGV was acquired by the Belgian capital investment company ATENOR Group. ATENOR also purchased another helmet company Lazer Helmets and established the IMAG Group. Thus the ownership of AGV and AGV Sports transferred to the brand name AGVSPORT and the company AGV Sports Group.
Later, in 2007 the brand AGV returned to its home by acquiring another world-renounced Italian motor-gear manufacturer Dainese. In the meantime, Gino Amisano the King of Helmets has passed in 2009. Now AGV is the concern of Dainese Group that owned by global corporate investment and real estate corporation INVESTCORP.
