When we hear the name Royal Enfield, we imagine powerful bikes made for adventure riding with the iconic dug dug exhaust note. But imagine doing adventure riding with a silent Royal Enfield how would that feel.

Royal Enfield Himalayan EV Successful Research And Testing Completed
At the EICMA 2023 event Royal Enfield surprised everyone by showcasing an electric version of their popular adventure tourer Himalayan model. It was an early prototype that appeared unfinished with open wires simple electronic parts and an incomplete design. It was clear that the bike was not yet ready for commercial production.
After the launch of the Himalayan 450 in India everyone’s attention turned to this electric version. Later Royal Enfield released new photos showing a completely improved version of the bike. The new electric Himalayan looked much more modern and stylish with high quality suspension brakes and build quality. All the electronic parts were neatly fitted inside the body kit giving the bike a premium appearance.

For the first time the new electric version was seen running on the road. Not only test rides but Royal Enfield engineers and officials also conducted several tests in the Himalayan region where it was tested alongside the Himalayan 750 prototype. Pictures of the electric Himalayan riding through snow mud and rocky trails were released proving its true adventure capability.

Seeing these experiments many thought that the electric Himalayan was about to hit the market soon because Royal Enfield had already revealed their small electric series called Flying Flea. But Mario Alvisi, the head of Royal Enfield’s electric division told the international motorcycle blog Visordown.com that the electric Himalayan was not made for commercial sale. It was created only for research and testing of new electric technology. In his words we started this project without any commercial purpose.

According to Mario the Himalayas are the spiritual home of Royal Enfield so testing adventure tourer bikes in this region makes perfect sense. The company is also working on sustainable adventure and ecofriendly tourism in the area with plans to install charging stations for electric vehicles. By testing in the harsh Himalayan environment the team can observe how the battery and electronic systems perform in cold heat dust mud and high altitude. Former MotoGP and World Superbike racer Carlos Checa also took part in this testing.
Although many bike enthusiasts may be disappointed that the electric Himalayan will not enter commercial production this initiative proves that Royal Enfield is serious about developing electric motorcycles. Gradually shifting from engine powered bikes to electric models reflects their strong RND capability and will inspire other companies as well.
