Noraly Schoenmaker – The Woman Behind Itchy Boots

Noraly Schoenmaker, popularly known as Itchy Boots is from the Netherlands and she used to work as a geologist. Before adventure motorcycling, she traveled many counties for her job and doing adventure hikes. In 2018, she decided to leave her job and travel the world and that time she picked a motorcycle for her journey. 

Later, what started as a personal journey that became one of the most popular and followed solo motorcycle travel series for YouTube folks. This Dutch solo traveler, Noraly now has redefined what it means to explore the world on two wheels. Leaving behind a very predictable career and routined office life, she chose an unconventional path that is full of dusty trails, remote border crossings, and endless colorful horizons in front.

Noraly travels alone and she does not have any support team, high-end setups, or follow any fixed plan or pre-designed travel layout. Noraly’s journeys are raw, authentic, and deeply personal that absolutely touch people’s heart. For her adventures, she mostly prefers small capacity, lightweight and known to reliable type dual-sport motorcycles, most commonly the Honda CRF300L Rally and a few earlier CRF models.

It proves that adventure does not require large-displacement machines and lightweight motorcycles are better for long and difficult routes. For the motorcycles, Noraly’s philosophy concentrated relying on simplicity, reliability, and adaptability rather high-performance or high speed. 

These qualities of a motorcycle are proven for tackling the situations in deserts, mountain passes, river crossings, and unpredictable terrains. And with these types of motorcycles, she has crossed deserts, mountains, forests, and remote villages across Africa, South America, Central America, the Middle East, Central Asia, and North America.

Noraly’s Adventures with Her Motorcycle

Noraly began her first long motorcycle journey in India, where she started riding from the southern part of the country and explored different regions. That journey was challenging, colorful, and sometimes very difficult, but it helped her to learn important lessons on solo riding. And this first journey from busy cities to isolated mountain roads helped to build her confidence and determine her future traveling style. 

After that ride, Noraly continued riding through Asia and later moved on to Africa and other continents. In her adventurous rides, Noraly rode through rough roads, river crossings, high mountain passes, and isolated areas countlessly.
